Bodmin Jail

Immerse yourself in Cornwall’s Dark History in our new ‘Dark Walk’ with state-of-the-art theatrical effects that bring some of the grimmest stories vividly to life.

Bodmin Jail is an experience for the family (please refer to their website for family recommendations), or for the daring who want to discover the paranormal.

The Jail is steeped in both social and architectural history, offers guests an amazing insight into Cornish penal life over the centuries.

Bodmin Jail was originally built for King George III in 1779; the Jail you see today was built with the help of the prisoners who brought 20,000 tons of granite from Bodmin’s Cuckoo Quarry. Visitors can wander through the depths of the Jail and browse creative exhibits depicting penal life in Victorian Cornwall.

Be sure to visit the Execution Shed; a fully restored, 4.5mtr deep, Victorian hanging pit. This is the only hanging pit in the UK and the site of the last man executed in Cornwall. Marvel at the building’s unique design, architecture, and engineering; from the inspired heating and cooling systems constructed to keep the Jail environment comfortable.

The Courtyard Restaurant serve family favourites such as crispy calamari with garlic aioli, slow-braised pork belly and sticky toffee pudding. On cooler days you can dine by the fire, and when the sun shines, there’s no better place to enjoy a simple dish with a cold beer or chilled glass of wine than our heated garden terrace. Our well stocked bar offers a great range, including local beers and ciders, wine, and soft drinks.

Not only that, but with Cornish Tea and Coffee providing the hot drinks and infusions, you can simply pop in for a coffee and a generous slice of homemade cake. Our cream teas are a delight too if you’re feeling a bit more peckish. Better still, treat yourself to an Afternoon Tea (advance booking required).

Do you dare to spend a night in the UK’s most haunted location? After Dark packages are available for over 18’s only. Check out their website for details and dates. Find out more.
